Guest Bedroom Makeover

Guest Bedroom Makeover

There is a ridiculous predicament involved in our guest bedroom planning. And that predicament is that we don’t know exactly which room on the second floor should be the guest room.

It’s ridiculous because how do we even have enough rooms that this isn’t automatically clear? In Chicago, we had two bedrooms on the second floor so it was very clear: this one is our room, this smaller one is the guest room (until it became our kids’ room). Our Alton house has four bedrooms. There are five rooms (not including bathrooms) on the second floor, but one is very, very small and I suppose is categorized as an office. I’ve been using that office for my occasional freelance work. Alex and I sleep in the master, the boys share the next largest room, and the next largest room after that is Alex’s office. There is one more very small room. The two options: We will use Alex’s office as the guest room shared with office OR make the smallest bedroom the guest bedroom.

I originally focused on the small room as the guest room, which is what led me to dark and cozy but fancy inspiration. I want to incorporate some sort of paneling or wainscoting and dark walls; heavy, grand curtains; and lots of little amenities for friends and relatives staying with us. Cozy bedding, little ledges and shelves for phones/jewelry, small wall mirror. Some fancy-inspired artwork and decor mixed with more utilitarian modern elements.

We have a modest four poster bed (I saw modest because the posts are short—it’s different from the one I used in this photo) and we will be working around that. Below is are some pieces of inspiration, focusing on the black walls and the millwork.

Ok, so this is a bathroom obviously, but the grand moodiness is what I’m going for. Via House of Brinson

Jenny Komenda’s bedroom designs are always so good, and this is a good argument for going more modern with the room. Via Juniper Home
